There are essentially two types of name changes. First, the use of a “chosen name" or "nickname” where a student, staff, or faculty member utilizes the built-in features to input their chosen name into "nickname" or "chosen" name fields. The second name change is an "official" name change. Below are instructions for both.
Chosen Name Changes
There are four steps required to update your chosen name in our WSU systems. If you have questions, please contact the LGBTQ+ Center Student Life and Community Coordinator, Josie Cohen-Rodriguez.
Step 1: Update Preferred Name at account.wsu.edu
- Visit account.wsu.edu to update your preferred name.
- View step-by step process outlined on the Confluence website.
Step 2: Change Network ID (NID) and WSU Email
- Contact Information Technology Services (ITS) to request a change to your Network ID (NID) and email address.
- Call the ITS Help Desk at 509-335-HELP (4357) to submit request by phone.
- Note: This change may temporarily affect your access to WSU systems for up to 24 hours.
Step 3: Update Your CougarCard
- The Cougar Card Center offers free replacements and a new photo upon request after you have completed your name change. Visit them in the CUB.
Step 4: Update Pronouns in MyWSU (Optional)
- Log in to my.WSU.edu.
- On the Homepage, select Profile, select the “Personal Details” tab, select the “Biographic” tab.
- Select your pronouns.
Legal Name Changes
- Legal name changes are handled through Payroll Services. More information is available on Payroll Services website.
